The Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport. It is linked electronically to your passport and is valid for multiple trips over 5 years, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
Each visit can normally last up to 6 months. The eTA does not guarantee entry — a border services officer makes the final decision on arrival.
You do not need an eTA if entering Canada by land or sea — only air travel requires it.

US citizens and US lawful permanent residents (green card holders) do not need an eTA. Canadian citizens and permanent residents cannot apply — Canadians travel on a Canadian passport.
